(くん) is an informal honorific suffix used primarily for males who are younger or of equal/lower social status.

USAGE:

  • Attached to family names or given names
  • Used by superiors addressing juniors: teachers to male students, bosses to younger male employees
  • Between male peers, especially classmates or colleagues of similar rank
  • Some workplaces use (くん) for female employees as well, though this is becoming less common

HONORIFIC HIERARCHY:

  • (さま) (sama): very formal/respectful
  • ~さん (san): neutral/polite (default)
  • (くん) (kun): informal (males/juniors)
  • ~ちゃん (chan): affectionate/cute

NOTE:
In the Japanese parliament (国会(こっかい)), all members are addressed with (くん) regardless of gender. This is a formal, traditional usage distinct from everyday speech.
