2. to push out; to force out

To expel or exclude someone or something.

競争(きょうそう)で負(ま)けた会社(かいしゃ)は市場(しじょう)から弾(はじ)き出(だ)される。

A compound verb: 弾(はじ)く (to flick, to repel) + 出(だ)す (to put out). The two senses come from the two readings of that flick — flicking beads to produce a figure, or flicking something away so it ends up outside.

Etymology

The calculating sense comes from the 算盤(そろばん) (abacus), whose beads are flicked to produce a result. It still suggests working a figure out rather than merely reading it off, so it fits estimates and projections better than simple arithmetic.

USAGE (sense 2, exclusion):
Sense 2 is most often passive — 弾(はじ)き出(だ)される — because the interesting party is the one pushed out, not whoever did the pushing. It is stronger and more impersonal than simply being left out: a market or a group squeezes the person or company out.
