Forms

Compound verb: 取(と)る (to take, here little more than a prefix adding briskness) + 繕(つくろ)う (to mend). The base verb 繕(つくろ)う already carries both the literal mending sense and the "keeping up appearances" sense; 取(と)り繕(つくろ)う adds the suggestion of doing it hastily, on the spot.

Usage

Sense 2 is by far the more common in modern use, and it is unflattering: the speaker is pointing out that only the surface was dealt with. The fixed collocation その場(ば)を取(と)り繕(つくろ)う — smoothing over an awkward moment so the conversation can move on — is worth learning as a unit.

Transitive, taking を for the damage, fault, or situation being patched over.
