GENDER: Traditionally feminine. Associated with elegant, refined female speech. Male speakers typically use かな instead.
REGISTER: Neutral to slightly formal feminine speech. Common in:

- Self-directed questions (talking to oneself)
- Rhetorical wondering
VS. かな:
- かしら: feminine, softer
- かな: gender-neutral, more common overall
- かなあ: slightly more masculine or emphatic
