Kyushu dialect conjunction equivalent to standard Japanese けど or でも, used to introduce a contrasting statement.
()きたかったばってん、時間(じかん)がなかった。
I wanted to go, but I didn't have time.
よかばってん、ちょっと(たか)かね。
It's good, but it's a bit expensive.
(むずか)しかばってん、頑張(がんば)る。
It's difficult, but I'll do my best.

DIALECT:
Kyushu (九州(きゅうしゅう)) dialect, used throughout the region including Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and other prefectures.

STANDARD EQUIVALENT:
けど / けれども / でも (standard Japanese)

ETYMOLOGY:
Derived from classical Japanese ばとて (ba tote), meaning "even though."

USAGE:

One of the most recognizable features of Kyushu dialect. Often heard in combination with other Kyushu dialect features:

  • 〜ばい / 〜たい (sentence-ending particles)
  • 〜と? (question marker)
  • よか (good)

REGIONAL VARIATION:
