Kyushu dialect conjunction equivalent to standard Japanese けど or でも, used to introduce a contrasting statement.
行きたかったばってん、時間がなかった。
I wanted to go, but I didn't have time.
よかばってん、ちょっと高かね。
It's good, but it's a bit expensive.
難しかばってん、頑張る。
It's difficult, but I'll do my best.
DIALECT:
Kyushu (九州) dialect, used throughout the region including Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and other prefectures.
STANDARD EQUIVALENT:
けど / けれども / でも (standard Japanese)
ETYMOLOGY:
Derived from classical Japanese ばとて (ba tote), meaning "even though."
USAGE:
One of the most recognizable features of Kyushu dialect. Often heard in combination with other Kyushu dialect features:
- 〜ばい / 〜たい (sentence-ending particles)
- 〜と？ (question marker)
- よか (good)
REGIONAL VARIATION:
