For smoke, steam, mist, or similar things to rise upward. Often used for visual phenomena that drift or billow upward.
煙が立ち上る。
Smoke rises.

I could see white smoke rising from the volcano's crater.
TRANSITIVITY:
Intransitive (自動詞). The subject (smoke, steam, etc.) rises on its own.
CONJUGATION (godan, る-row):
- Negative: 立ち上らない
- Te-form: 立ち上って
- Past: 立ち上った
ASPECT:
立ち上っている indicates smoke or steam is currently rising (ongoing action).
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
