Steam was rising from the hot spring.
火山(かざん)の火口(かこう)から白(しろ)い煙(けむり)が立(た)ち上(のぼ)っているのが見(み)えた。
I could see white smoke rising from the volcano's crater.

TRANSITIVITY:
Intransitive (自動詞(じどうし)). The subject (smoke, steam, etc.) rises on its own.

CONJUGATION (godan, る-row):

  • Negative: 立(た)ち上(のぼ)らない
  • Te-form: 立(た)ち上(のぼ)って
  • Past: 立(た)ち上(のぼ)った

ASPECT:
立(た)ち上(のぼ)っている indicates smoke or steam is currently rising (ongoing action).

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
