だよな

だよな
expression
right?, isn't it?
1. right?, isn't it?, I know
A casual expression used to seek or express agreement. Can be a tag question confirming what someone said, or a self-directed statement of realization or conviction. Predominantly used by male speakers.
「あれ、(たか)いよね」「だよな」
"That's expensive, right?" "I know, right?"
やっぱりそうだよな。
I knew it.
今日(きょう)のテスト、(むずか)しかったよな」「だよな、全然(ぜんぜん)できなかった」
"Today's test was hard, wasn't it?" "Right? I couldn't do any of it."

だよな is a casual agreement marker composed of だ (copula) + よ (assertion) + な (confirmation-seeking). It is strongly associated with masculine speech, though younger women occasionally use it in casual settings.

USAGE PATTERNS:

  • As a response: 「だよな」 confirms what the other person just said, similar to English "I know, right?"
  • Sentence-final: 「やっぱりそうだよな」 reinforces one's own conclusion
  • As a tag: 「(むずか)しいだよな」 is incorrect — attach to the plain form: 「(むずか)しいよな」

GENDER NOTE:
だよな is mainly used by men in casual conversation. Women more commonly use だよね, which has a softer, more inclusive tone.

RELATED FORMS:

  • だよね: gender-neutral/feminine equivalent
  • だよな〜: drawn out, expressing strong empathy or resignation
  • ですよね: polite equivalent
