To narrowly avoid death; to have one's life saved, typically after an accident or illness. Almost always used in the set phrase 命を取り留める.
命は取り留めた。

事故に遭ったが、奇跡的に命を取り留めて意識を回復した。
He was in an accident but miraculously survived and regained consciousness.
USAGE:
Almost exclusively used in the pattern 命を取り留める or 一命を取り留める. Rarely used with other objects.
