To allow something to come to an end or cease to exist, often through neglect or inaction. Used for traditions, lineages, fires, and other things that can be maintained or lost.
伝統を絶やしてはいけない。
We must not let the tradition die out.
火を絶やさないように薪をくべた。
I added firewood so the fire wouldn't go out.
先祖から続く家系を絶やさないように、跡継ぎを探している。
They are looking for a successor so as not to let the family line that has continued from their ancestors die out.

To use up or fail to maintain a stock of something. Often used in the negative form to mean keeping a constant supply.
笑顔を絶やさない。
She never stops smiling.
花を絶やさず飾っている。
She always keeps flowers on display without letting them run out.
あの店はいつも客が絶えないので、予約なしでは入れない。
That restaurant always has a steady stream of customers, so you can't get in without a reservation.
Uses the intransitive form 絶えない.
TRANSITIVITY: 絶やす is transitive. The intransitive counterpart is 絶える (to cease, to die out).
ASPECT (ている): 絶やしている indicates an ongoing state of having let something lapse.
NEGATIVE FORM: Very frequently used in the negative (絶やさない) to express maintaining something continuously: 笑顔を絶やさない (to always keep smiling).
