To perform an action with deep respect and humility. Used in very formal contexts such as official announcements, New Year's greetings, and formal letters. Almost always appears in the form 謹んで (respectfully).
Distinguished from the homophone 慎む, which means 'to be careful/restrained' (self-control). 謹む conveys deep respect and reverence, while 慎む conveys caution and restraint. Almost exclusively used in the て-form 謹んで (respectfully, humbly) as a formal prefix to polite expressions. Common collocations: 謹んでお受けする (humbly accept), 謹んでお祝い申し上げる (respectfully congratulate), 謹んでお悔やみ申し上げる (offer sincere condolences). Also appears in 謹賀新年 (Happy New Year, formal).
