Originally describes the supernatural act of foxes or tanuki deceiving humans by shapeshifting. By extension, used for any clever trick or deception that fools someone.

A verb rooted in Japanese folklore, where foxes (狐) and tanuki (狸) are believed to have the ability to shapeshift and deceive humans. The passive form 化かされる ('to be tricked/bewitched') is especially common.
