2. to pull down; to drag down; to knock down from above

A compound verb from ()く (to pull) and ()とす (to drop, to let fall). The literal meaning is 'to pull (something) down,' and the financial sense is a metaphorical extension: the bank 'pulls the money out and down' from your account.

USAGE:

  • In sense 1 (banking), by far the most common use in daily life. Very often appears in the passive ()()とされる, with the customer's account as subject: 口座(こうざ)から()()とされる (to be debited from the account). The related noun ()()とし means 'direct debit / automatic withdrawal.'
  • In sense 2 (physical), used for pulling someone or something downward — a riding opponent, a wall climber, or in sumo where it is a recognized technique name ()()とし.

TRANSITIVITY:

  • Transitive in both senses. The thing pulled down, or the money/payment, is marked with を.
  • The paired intransitive for sense 1 is not normally used; the passive form covers the from-the-account perspective.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS (sense 1):

  • 口座(こうざ)から()()とす: to debit from a bank account
  • 自動(じどう)()()とし: automatic debit / direct debit
  • クレジットカード}の{引()()とし: credit card withdrawal
  • ()()としができない: (the debit) fails

COMMON COLLOCATIONS (sense 2):

  • (うま)から()()とす: to pull (someone) off a horse
  • 相手(あいて)()()とす: to pull the opponent down (sumo)

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • ()()す: to withdraw (money) — active withdrawal by the account holder, not automatic
  • ()()む: to deposit / transfer — money flows the other way
  • ()ずり}{下()ろす: to drag down / pull down forcibly — stronger, more violent version of sense 2
