でしょうか

Composed of the polite conjectural copula でしょう plus the question particle か. Adds a softening, tentative, or deferential nuance to a polite question compared with plain ですか.

Usage

• Follows nouns, na-adjectives (bare stem), i-adjectives (plain form), and plain-form verbs: 学生(がくせい)でしょうか、静(しず)かでしょうか、高(たか)いでしょうか、来(く)るでしょうか.
• Commonly used in polite service encounters (shops, hotels, customer service) and formal conversation.
• Can convey tentativeness about one's own guess (e.g., 雨(あめ)でしょうか — 'I wonder if it'll rain'), or be a polite inquiry directed to the listener (e.g., 何時(なんじ)でしょうか — 'What time is it, may I ask?').
• Double-polite ~ますでしょうか (as in いただけますでしょうか) is widely used in business keigo despite being technically redundant; it is accepted in service industry speech.
