Formed from the particle に, the verb (かぎ)る ('to limit') in its て-form, and an implicit reference back to the preceding noun. Structurally equivalent to 'limited to X' → 'only in the case of X', with two major extended uses for unexpected coincidences and confident denials.

PATTERNS:

  • [noun] + に(かぎ)って — sense 1 and 2
  • [noun] + に(かぎ)り — a slightly more formal variant, especially common in signs and announcements; typically carries sense 1 only
  • [noun (person)] + に(かぎ)って + ... はずがない / とは(おも)えない / そんなことはない — sense 3

SENSE 2 — UNEXPECTED COINCIDENCE:
With time expressions or situations, に(かぎ)って conveys the speaker's feeling that an inconvenient event happens specifically at the worst possible time. The tone is almost always emotional — frustrated, resigned, or ironic.

SENSE 3 — CONFIDENT DENIAL:
With a person's name or a group, に(かぎ)って expresses the speaker's strong belief that this particular person (unlike others) would not do the thing described. The clause that follows is nearly always negative in form or meaning.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • 今日(きょう)(かぎ)って: only today; precisely today
  • 会員(かいいん)(かぎ)って: only for members
  • ~する(とき)(かぎ)って: precisely when ...
  • うちの()(かぎ)って: my child of all people
  • ~に(かぎ)りません: is not limited to ~

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • だけ: only — general limiting particle; more neutral and does not carry the strong 'specifically this one' emphasis.
  • のみ: only — formal / written synonym of だけ, similarly neutral.
  • ~に(かぎ)る: to be limited to; to be the best — same verb, but used predicatively (e.g., (なつ)はビールに(かぎ)る, 'in summer, beer is the best').
  • ~ばかり: only; nothing but — implies repetition or exclusivity of an activity; does not carry the 'of all times/people' nuance.
