1. change of registered domicile; transfer of family register
Moving one's official family register (koseki) to a different municipality. In Japan, every family has a registered domicile (honseki) that is separate from the actual address of residence. Transferring this registration is a bureaucratic procedure done at city hall.
結婚(けっこん)()転籍(てんせき)した
I transferred my family register when I got married.
You need to submit a domicile transfer notification to city hall.
If you transfer your registered domicile to your current address, it becomes more convenient to obtain copies of your family register.
2. transfer to another company or organization
In a business context, a permanent transfer of employment from one company to another, often between affiliated companies within a corporate group. Unlike temporary secondment, the employee's affiliation changes completely.
子会社(こがいしゃ)転籍(てんせき)になった。
I was permanently transferred to a subsidiary.
Before retirement, I was approached about a permanent transfer to an affiliated company.
Unlike secondment, with a permanent transfer the employment relationship with the original company is completely severed.

Composed of (てん) (transfer, change) and (せき) (register, membership). The two senses share the core idea of officially moving one's registration from one place to another.

The family register sense (sense 1) is specific to Japan's koseki system. Everyone in Japan has a 本籍地(ほんせきち) (registered domicile) that may differ from their actual residence. Transferring the register is typically done after marriage, divorce, or simply for convenience.
