The 媒酌人(ばいしゃくにん) (matchmaker/go-between) was historically a respected married couple who introduced the bride and groom, helped negotiate between families, and presided over the wedding ceremony. While 見合(みあ)い (arranged marriage meetings) still occur, the formal role of 媒酌人(ばいしゃくにん) has become much less common in modern Japan.
