1. to move along; to run down (following a surface)
To move along the length of something, using it as a path or support. Often used of liquid (tears, sweat, rain) running down a surface, or of a person making their way along a wall, rope, or ledge. The surface followed is marked with を.
涙(なみだ)が頬(ほお)を伝(つた)う。
Tears run down the cheeks.
汗(あせ)が背中(せなか)を伝(つた)って落(お)ちた。
Sweat ran down my back and dripped off.
壁(かべ)を伝(つた)って暗(くら)い廊下(ろうか)を進(すす)んだ。
I made my way down the dark hallway feeling along the wall.

TRANSITIVITY:

  • Takes を to mark the surface followed, but describes movement along it rather than acting on it. Tagged transitive.
  • Pattern: Xが場所(ばしょ)を伝(つた)う

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • 涙(なみだ)が頬(ほお)を伝(つた)う: tears run down the cheeks
  • 壁(かべ)を伝(つた)う: feel one's way along a wall
  • 雨水(あまみず)が窓(まど)を伝(つた)う: rainwater trickles down the window

NOTE:
Do not confuse with 伝(つた)わる (to be transmitted, to be conveyed) or 伝(つた)える (to convey). 伝(つた)う is specifically physical movement along a surface.
