to move along; to run down (following a surface)
To move along the length of something, using it as a path or support. Often used of liquid (tears, sweat, rain) running down a surface, or of a person making their way along a wall, rope, or ledge. The surface followed is marked with を.
Transitivity
- Takes を to mark the surface followed, but describes movement along it rather than acting on it. Tagged intransitive, like other path-of-motion verbs (歩く, 飛ぶ).
- Pattern: Xが場所を伝う
Common patterns
- 涙が頬を伝う: tears run down the cheeks
- 壁を伝う: feel one's way along a wall
- 雨水が窓を伝う: rainwater trickles down the window
Usage
Do not confuse with 伝わる (to be transmitted, to be conveyed) or 伝える (to convey). 伝う is specifically physical movement along a surface.
