Figuratively, of misfortune or trouble, to come down on someone unexpectedly. The affected person is marked with に, and the trouble is the grammatical subject.
災難が彼に降りかかった。

Unexpected misfortune fell upon the family.
自分に火の粉が降りかかってこないうちに逃げた方がいい。
