Marks a parallel change: as the first situation progresses, a second situation changes accordingly. Both clauses describe gradual, related shifts.
年をとるにつれて、記憶力が落ちる。
As one gets older, memory declines.

As time passed, the pain eased.
経済が発展するにつれて、人々の生活も豊かになった。
As the economy developed, people's lives also became more affluent.
From the verb 連れる (to bring along) in て form, with the particle に. Treated as a fixed grammatical pattern.
