Marks a parallel change: as the first situation progresses, a second situation changes accordingly. Both clauses describe gradual, related shifts.

As one gets older, memory declines.

As time passed, the pain eased.

As the economy developed, people's lives also became more affluent.

From the verb 連(つ)れる (to bring along) in て form, with the particle に. Treated as a fixed grammatical pattern.

The more formal written variant is につれ (drop て).

に従(したが)って: as; in accordance with — more formal; can also mean 'according to (rules)'
とともに: along with — emphasizes simultaneity rather than proportional change
ほど: the more... the more — used with comparison; emphasizes degree

Note: Both clauses must describe a change. Cannot be used with one-time events: ✗ 結婚(けっこん)するにつれて、引(ひ)っ越(こ)した。
