1. to come to an end; to finish; to be exhausted
For a long process, struggle, or one's energy to reach a complete end. Has a literary, definitive feel — stronger than ()わる.
(なが)(たたか)いが()てた。
The long battle came to an end.
(いのち)()てるまで(かれ)(あい)(つづ)けた。
She kept loving him until her life came to an end.
議論(ぎろん)結局(けっきょく)結論(けつろん)()ないまま()ててしまった。
In the end, the discussion just petered out without reaching a conclusion.
2. (as suffix) to do completely; to ~ utterly
Attached to the conjunctive form of another verb, indicates the action has been carried out to the point of exhaustion or complete depletion. Often written 〜はてる in kana.
(かれ)(つか)れはてて(ねむ)()んだ。
He was utterly exhausted and fell into a deep sleep.
長年(ながねん)介護(かいご)(はは)(よわ)りはてていた。
After years of caregiving, my mother had become utterly weakened.
何度(なんど)(ことわ)っても勧誘(かんゆう)電話(でんわ)()て、(こま)りはててしまった。
No matter how often I refused, the sales calls kept coming, and I was at my wit's end.

Literary and somewhat dated in sense 1; the suffix use in sense 2 is far more common in everyday Japanese.

TRANSITIVITY:
Intransitive. There is a transitive counterpart ()たす (to accomplish, to fulfill — entirely different meaning despite the related kanji).

COMMON SUFFIX COMPOUNDS (sense 2):

  • (つか)れはてる: to be utterly exhausted
  • (こま)りはてる: to be at one's wit's end
  • (よわ)りはてる: to become utterly weakened
  • ()わりはてる: to change beyond recognition
  • あきれ(あきれ)はてる: to be utterly dumbfounded

SIMILAR WORDS:

  • ()わる: to end — neutral, everyday word
  • ()きる: to run out, to be used up — emphasizes depletion of a supply
  • ()くなる: to pass away — euphemism for death; ()てる can mean to die but feels literary
