Usage
Sense 1 implies a sudden shift from being caught/defensive to being aggressive and confrontational. More aggressive than 開き直る, which is merely becoming defiant. Sense 2 is the older, literal meaning and is now rare; in modern Japanese 居直る almost always means sense 1.
