2. to hold back; to suppress (emotions)
To restrain oneself from expressing emotions such as tears, laughter, or anger.
(なみだ)(こら)えた。
I held back my tears.
(わら)いを(こら)えるのが大変(たいへん)だった。
It was hard to hold back my laughter.
(いか)りを(こら)えて冷静(れいせい)(はな)した。
I suppressed my anger and spoke calmly.

(こら)える emphasizes internal fortitude and self-control.

KANJI NOTE:
Alternatively written as (こら)える, though (こら)える is more common. Both share the sense of endurance.
