attributive form of copula (used with na-adjectives)
1. attributive form of copula
The attributive form of the copula だ, used to connect na-adjectives to nouns they modify. This is why these adjectives are called 'na-adjectives' (形容動詞).

な is the attributive form of the copula だ, used to connect na-adjectives (形容動詞) to the nouns they modify.

GRAMMAR:

  • [na-adjective] + な + [noun]
  • Example: (しず)か + な + 部屋(へや) = a quiet room

CONTRAST WITH だ:

  • だ is the predicative form (sentence-ending): (しず)かだ (It's quiet)
  • な is the attributive form (before nouns): (しず)かな部屋(へや) (quiet room)

NOTE: Do not confuse with:

  • () (name) - a noun
  • な (sentence-ending particle for commands) - a different particle
