1. to mix in, to intersperse, to include

To include or mix different elements together. Often used for mixing things like humor into speech, or different items into a group.

冗談(じょうだん)を交(ま)じえて話(はな)す。

To speak with humor mixed in.

日本語(にほんご)に英語(えいご)を交(ま)じえて説明(せつめい)した。

I explained it mixing English into my Japanese.

2. to exchange (fire, blows); to cross (swords)

To engage with an opponent, as in exchanging fire or fighting a battle; also used in a set phrase for talking closely, knee to knee.

両軍(りょうぐん)は国境(こっきょう)で砲火(ほうか)を交(ま)じえた。

The two armies exchanged fire at the border.

交(ま)じえる has two main uses: (1) to mix in or intersperse different elements, and (2) to engage with an opponent (fire, blows, a battle).

Slightly formal/literary. In casual speech, 混(ま)ぜる is more common for physical mixing.
