WORD FORMATION:
慈 (compassion, loving-kindness) + 悲 (sorrow, empathy for suffering). In Buddhist thought, 慈 means giving happiness and 悲 means removing suffering.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 慈悲の心: a compassionate heart
- 慈悲深い: deeply compassionate
- 慈悲をかける: to show mercy
- 慈悲にすがる: to beg for mercy
CULTURAL NOTE:
慈悲 is rooted in Buddhist philosophy. The 観音(Kannon, Goddess of Mercy) is the embodiment of 慈悲 in Japanese Buddhism. In everyday use, it retains a somewhat elevated, literary tone compared to 思いやり (consideration, empathy).
