To physically or abstractly occupy a place, position, or role.

To constitute a certain proportion or percentage of a whole.

Food costs make up the majority of the expenditure.

占(し)める means to occupy a position or to account for a proportion. Not to be confused with the homophones 閉(し)める (to close) and 締(し)める (to tighten).
