Composed of 検(けん) (examine, inspect) + 死(し) (death). 検死(けんし) is the everyday and media spelling; the legal term is 検視(けんし), the external examination of a body by police or a prosecutor. An internal examination is 解剖(かいぼう) (司法解剖(しほうかいぼう) when ordered in a criminal case), but in casual usage 検死(けんし) often covers both.
