1. possessive marker (of, 's)
Connects nouns to show possession, affiliation, or attribution. Similar to English "of" or "'s".

2. nominalizer
Turns verbs and adjectives into noun phrases. Often used with が for emphasis on the nominalized clause.

3. explanatory (のだ/んだ)
Used in のです/のだ/んです/んだ patterns to give explanations, seek explanations, or add emotional emphasis.
どうしたんですか。
What happened? / What's wrong?
明日(あした)試験(しけん)があるんです。
It's that I have an exam tomorrow.

の is one of the most frequently used particles in Japanese.

MAIN USES:
1. Possession: (わたし)(ほん) (my book)
2. Attribution: ()(つくえ) (wooden desk)
3. Apposition: 友達(ともだち)田中(たなか)さん (my friend Tanaka)
4. Nominalization: ()べるのが()き (like eating)
5. Explanation: 病気(びょうき)なんです (It's that I'm sick)

PATTERNS:

  • Xの Y: X's Y, Y of X
  • Verb/Adj + のが: (the act of) verb/adj + subject marker
  • Verb/Adj + のは: (the act of) verb/adj + topic marker
  • のです/のだ/んです/んだ: explanatory ending

NOTE: In casual speech, の often contracts to ん before です/だ.
