to eat
The most common verb for eating. Used for consuming food by putting it in the mouth and swallowing. This is the neutral form without politeness implications, unlike 召し上がる (meshiagaru) which is honorific or いただく (itadaku) which is humble.
何か食べたいです。
I want to eat something.
TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞 (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xを食べる (eat X).
ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. 食べている = 'is eating' (progressive, not resultative).
