1. to see, to look at
The general verb for visual perception. Can mean passive seeing (something enters your field of vision) or active looking (directing your attention to something).
(やま)()る。
To look at the mountain.
これ()ください
Please look at this.
When I looked at the sky, there were many stars.
I looked outside from the window to check the weather.
2. to watch
Used for watching TV, movies, sports, or any extended visual activity. テレビを()る (to watch TV), 映画(えいが)()る (to watch a movie).
テレビ()る。
To watch TV.
映画(えいが)()ましょう。
Let's watch a movie.
The children are watching anime.
Yesterday, I watched a soccer match.
I watch the news every night before going to bed. I want to know what happened today.
3. to try (doing something)
When attached to the te-form of another verb (〜てみる), expresses trying or attempting an action to see what happens.
()べて()る。
To try eating.
〜てみる expressing 'try doing'
()べて()たいです
I want to try eating (it).
Please try reading this book.
I tried making a new dish.
I thought it would be difficult, but when I tried it, it was surprisingly easy.

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xを()る (see/watch X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. ()ている = 'is watching/looking at.'

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • テレビを()る (watch TV)
  • 映画(えいが)()る (watch a movie)
  • 〜て()る (try doing〜)
  • ()てください (please look)

Auxiliary usage: 〜て()る means 'try doing.' Ichidan verb: ()ない, ()ます, ()て, ()た.
