(わたし) is the most standard and versatile first-person pronoun in Japanese, appropriate for nearly all situations. Used by both men and women.

READINGS:

  • わたし: standard polite form
  • わたくし: very formal (business, speeches, ceremonies)

FIRST-PERSON PRONOUN HIERARCHY:

  • (わたくし): very formal, both genders
  • (わたし): polite/neutral, both genders (safest default)
  • あたし: casual, mainly female
  • (ぼく): casual, male (softer tone)
  • (おれ): very casual, male (rough/masculine)

USAGE NOTES:

  • In formal writing and business, (わたし) or (わたくし) is always appropriate
  • In casual conversation, men often switch to (ぼく) or (おれ)
  • Japanese often drops the subject entirely when context makes it clear, so (わたし) is used less frequently than "I" in English
