1. to go, to move (toward a destination)
Expresses movement away from the speaker's current location toward a destination. The opposite of ()る (to come). Used when the speaker is not at the destination.
I go to school.
一緒(いっしょ)()きましょう。
Let's go together.
I'm going to Tokyo tomorrow.

Want to go shopping?
Every summer, our family goes to the beach. The kids always look forward to it.
2. to proceed, to continue
When attached to the te-form of another verb (〜ていく), indicates an action continuing into the future or moving away from the speaker's perspective.
It keeps increasing.
I will continue to study from now on.
I'm gradually beginning to understand.
I want to keep doing my best from now on.
As times change, we too must continue learning new things.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Counterpart: ()る (to come). Pattern: Xに/へ()く (go to X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action or resulting state. ()っている can mean 'is going' or 'has gone (and is there now).'

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • 学校(がっこう)()く (go to school)
  • ()(もの)()く (go shopping)
  • (あそ)びに()く (go to hang out)
  • 〜て()く (go and do ~, or do ~ as one goes)

IRREGULAR FORMS:

  • Te-form: ()って (not ()いて)
  • Also read as ゆく in literary contexts

The auxiliary 〜ていく indicates continuing into the future or moving away.
