To carry out an action (casual form of する).
宿題をやる。
To do homework.
今日は何をやるの？
What are you doing today?
やってみる。
I'll give it a try.
仕事をやり終えた。
I finished doing the work.
一生懸命やった。
I did my best.
2.
to give (to inferiors/animals)
To give something to animals, plants, or those of lower status.
犬に餌をやる。
To give food to the dog.
花に水をやる。
To water the flowers.
猫にご飯をやった。
I fed the cat.
庭の木に水をやる。
I water the trees in the garden.
金魚に餌をやる。
I feed the goldfish.
やる has two main uses.
1. TO DO (casual):
- やる = する (more casual)
- 仕事をやる (to do work)
2. TO GIVE (downward):
- Used for animals, plants, younger siblings
- 犬に餌をやる (feed the dog)
- 花に水をやる (water flowers)
NOTE: For giving to equals/superiors, use あげる.
