Used when imparting knowledge or skills to someone. The person being taught is marked with に.
田中(たなか)先生(せんせい)は数学(すうがく)を教(おし)えています。
Mr. Tanaka teaches mathematics.
日本語(にほんご)を教(おし)えてもらいました。
I had someone teach me Japanese.
Receiving the favor of being taught
子供(こども)に泳(およ)ぎ方(かた)を教(おし)えます。

Used when sharing information like phone numbers, addresses, or directions with someone.

住所(じゅうしょ)を教(おし)えていただけますか。
Could you tell me your address?
名前(なまえ)を教(おし)えてもらえますか。

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: XにYを教(おし)える (teach Y to X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action or occupation. 教(おし)えている = 'is teaching' or 'teaches (as a profession).'
