1. to teach, to instruct
Used when imparting knowledge or skills to someone. The person being taught is marked with に.
Mr. Tanaka teaches mathematics.
I had someone teach me Japanese.
Receiving the favor of being taught
I teach children how to swim.
My mother taught me how to cook.
大学(だいがく)英語(えいご)(おし)えています。
I teach English at a university.
He taught me how to use it, so I understood right away.
2. to tell, to inform
Used when sharing information like phone numbers, addresses, or directions with someone.
Please tell me your phone number.
(みち)(おし)えてください
Please tell me the way.
Could you tell me your address?
Could you tell me your name?
Could you tell me how to get to the station?

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: XにYを(おし)える (teach Y to X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action or occupation. (おし)えている = 'is teaching' or 'teaches (as a profession).'
