1. to receive (humble)

Humble form of もらう, used when receiving from someone of higher status.

先生(せんせい)から本(ほん)をいただきました。

I received a book from my teacher.

Humble receiving

お時間(じかん)をいただきたいのですが。

I would like to have some of your time.

Formal request

お土産(みやげ)をいただいた。

I received a souvenir.

ご招待(しょうたい)いただきありがとうございます。

Thank you for the invitation.

許可(きょか)をいただきたいのですが。

I would like to receive permission.

2. to eat; to drink (humble)

Humble form of 食べる and 飲む.

いただきます。

Thank you for the meal. (said before eating)

Common phrase before meals

コーヒーをいただきます。

I'll have coffee.

Polite ordering/accepting

遠慮(えんりょ)なくいただきます。

I'll have it without hesitation.

おいしくいただきました。

I enjoyed the meal.

ごちそうさまでした。おいしくいただきました。

Thank you for the meal. I enjoyed it.

3. to have someone do (humble auxiliary)

Used after て-form to express having someone of higher status do something for you.

教(おし)えていただけますか。

Could you please teach me?

Polite request

見(み)せていただけますか。

Could you show me?

説明(せつめい)していただけませんか。

Could you explain?

手伝(てつだ)っていただいて助(たす)かりました。

I was grateful for your help.

確認(かくにん)していただきたいのですが。

I would like you to confirm this.
