太平洋(たいへいよう) literally means "great peaceful ocean." It is the world's largest ocean, bordering Japan to the east.

ETYMOLOGY:
太(たい) (great) + 平(へい) (peaceful) + 洋(よう) (ocean). Named by Magellan for its calm appearance after the rough seas near South America.
