Common at school, where a class is divided into 班(はん) (groups) for lunch, cleaning or projects, and each group has a 班長(はんちょう), often a rotating role. A neighborhood association (町内会(ちょうないかい)) also has 班長(はんちょう) who pass round notices and collect dues. In the military it means a squad leader.
