戸籍(こせき) (family register) + 謄本(とうほん) (certified copy). The 戸籍(こせき) system is Japan's official civil registration system that records family relationships.

Usage

戸籍謄本(こせきとうほん) contains records for all members of a family unit. For a copy showing only one individual, you request a 戸籍抄本(こせきしょうほん) (partial extract).

Cultural note

It is issued by the municipality of one's 本籍地(ほんせきち) (registered domicile), which may differ from where one lives, by mail or, with a My Number card, at convenience-store terminals; since March 2024 any municipal office can also issue it in person. For registers kept on computer, the official document name is 戸籍全部事項証明書(こせきぜんぶじこうしょうめいしょ), though everyone still says 戸籍謄本(こせきとうほん).
