noun
must arrive by (a deadline)
1. must arrive by; required arrival by a deadline
Indicates that a document, application, or item must physically arrive at the destination by a specified date. Contrasts with 消印有効(けしいんゆうこう), where the postmark date counts.
Applications must arrive by October 31.
Please send the documents so they arrive by Friday.
I sent it by express mail to make the must-arrive deadline.

USAGE:
A compound of (ひっ) (must, certainly) and (ちゃく) (arrival). Very common in application deadlines for jobs, contests, government forms, and university admissions. Always used with a date to specify when the item must arrive.

IMPORTANT CONTRAST:

  • 必着(ひっちゃく): the item must physically arrive by the date
  • 消印有効(けしいんゆうこう): valid if postmarked by the date — more lenient, as only the mailing date matters

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • (にち)必着(ひっちゃく) (must arrive by ~ date)
  • 必着(ひっちゃく)(おく)る (to send for required arrival)
