1.
exhaust; exhaust gas; ventilation
The process of expelling used air or gas, or the expelled gas itself. Most commonly refers to vehicle exhaust or building ventilation systems.
Common compounds: 排気ガス (exhaust gas/fumes), 排気量 (engine displacement, measured in cc or liters), 排気口 (exhaust vent), 排気管 (exhaust pipe). The opposite is 吸気 (intake/inhalation). Not to be confused with the homophone 廃棄 (disposal/discarding). 排気量 is an important specification when buying a car in Japan, as it affects road tax rates.
