A bodyweight exercise in which one supports the body face-down on the arms and toes, and repeatedly lowers and raises the torso by bending and straightening the elbows. A standard exercise in physical education, gym workouts, and military training.

Composed of 腕立て (standing on one's arms) and 伏せ (lying face down). Literally something like "lying face down while standing on one's arms." It is the standard dictionary word for a push-up and is used in school physical education, fitness instructions, and everyday conversation about exercise.
