A traditional Japanese unit of area equal to about 3.3 square meters, or two tatami mats. Still widely used for land and real estate.
この土地(とち)五十坪(ごじゅっつぼ)ある。
This plot of land is fifty tsubo.
マンションの(ひろ)さは(やく)二十坪(にじゅっつぼ)です。
The apartment is about twenty tsubo in size.
一坪(ひとつぼ)(たたみ)二枚分(にまいぶん)(ひろ)さに相当(そうとう)する。
One tsubo is equivalent to the area of two tatami mats.

Used mainly for floor space and land area in real estate. One (つぼ) ≈ 3.3 m².

COUNTING PATTERN:

  • 1: 一坪(ひとつぼ)
  • 2: 二坪(ふたつぼ)
  • 3: 三坪(さんつぼ)
  • 4: 四坪(よんつぼ)
  • 5: 五坪(ごつぼ)
  • 10: 十坪(じゅっつぼ)

The first three use native readings ((ひと)/(ふた)/(さん)); from four up, the Sino-Japanese numbers are used. 8 and 10 commonly take a small っ (八坪(はっつぼ), 十坪(じゅっつぼ)).
