To remain with a spouse or partner until one of them dies, without separating. Used of a couple, and often carries a note of admiration for the constancy involved.
Formed from 添う (to accompany, to be married to) + 遂げる (to carry through to the end). The verb describes the whole span of a marriage, not a moment, so it is rarely used in the plain present tense about oneself except as a wish or vow.
