1. to stay married for life; to spend one's whole life together
To remain with a spouse or partner until one of them dies, without separating. Used of a couple, and often carries a note of admiration for the constancy involved.
二人(ふたり)()()げた。
The two stayed together for life.
祖父母(そふぼ)六十年(ろくじゅうねん)()()げた。
My grandparents were together for sixty years.
Everyone around them was opposed, but they managed to stay together to the end.

Formed from () (to accompany, to be married to) + ()げる (to carry through to the end). The verb describes the whole span of a marriage, not a moment, so it is rarely used in the plain present tense about oneself except as a wish or vow.

Common collocations

  • 最後(さいご)まで()()げる: to stay together to the very end
  • ()()げたい: to want to spend one's life with someone
  • ()()げられなかった: to have been unable to stay together
