1. to be able to, can

Expresses ability or possibility. Often used with nouns or the potential meaning of verbs.

日本語(にほんご)ができる。

I can speak Japanese.

Noun + ができる

料理(りょうり)ができますか？

Can you cook?

子供(こども)の時(とき)から泳(およ)ぐことができるようになりました。

I became able to swim since I was a child.

V dict + ことができる

この公園(こうえん)では写真(しゃしん)を撮(と)ることができますが、動物(どうぶつ)に触(さわ)ることはできません。

You can take photos in this park, but you cannot touch the animals.

彼(かれ)は英語(えいご)も中国語(ちゅうごくご)もできるので、外国(がいこく)のお客(きゃく)さんと話(はな)すときに助(たす)けてもらっています。

He can speak both English and Chinese, so I have him help when talking with foreign customers.

2. to be completed, to be made

For something to come into existence or be finished.

ビルができた。

A building was completed.

Completion sense

準備(じゅんび)ができました。

The preparations are done.

駅(えき)の前(まえ)に新(あたら)しい店(みせ)ができました。

A new shop opened in front of the station.

この机(つくえ)は木(き)でできています。

This desk is made of wood.

でできている = made of

近(ちか)くに大(おお)きな公園(こうえん)ができて、子供(こども)たちが毎日(まいにち)遊(あそ)んでいます。

A large park was built nearby, and children play there every day.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xができる (X is possible/able).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. できている = 'is ready/completed' or 'is made of.'

COMMON PATTERNS:

木(き)でできている (made of wood)
