1. until, to (time endpoint)

Marks the ending point in time. 五時(ごじ)まで働(はたら)く (work until 5 o'clock), 明日(あした)まで (until tomorrow).

十二時(じゅうにじ)まで起(お)きていました。

I was up until 12 o'clock.

Time endpoint

金曜日(きんようび)までに提出(ていしゅつ)してください。

Please submit it by Friday.

までに = by (deadline)

夜(よる)の十一時(じゅういちじ)まで勉強(べんきょう)しました。

I studied until 11 PM.

今(いま)まで何(なに)をしていましたか。

What have you been doing until now?

来年(らいねん)まで待(ま)てません。

I can't wait until next year.

2. to, as far as (spatial endpoint)

Marks the ending point in space. 駅(えき)まで歩(ある)く (walk to the station).

東京(とうきょう)から大阪(おおさか)まで新幹線(しんかんせん)で行(い)きます。

I'll take the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka.

から...まで for spatial range

ここまで来(き)てくれてありがとう。

Thank you for coming all the way here.

Spatial endpoint with appreciation

学校(がっこう)まで歩(ある)いて十分(じゅっぷん)かかります。

It takes ten minutes to walk to school.

空港(くうこう)まで送(おく)ってくれますか。

Can you take me to the airport?

山(やま)の頂上(ちょうじょう)まで登(のぼ)りました。

I climbed all the way to the top of the mountain.

3. even (emphasis)

Emphasizes an extreme or unexpected extent. 彼(かれ)まで来(き)た (even he came), 子供(こども)まで知(し)っている (even children know).

子供(こども)まで分(わ)かる簡単(かんたん)な問題(もんだい)です。

It's such an easy problem that even children understand.

Emphatic 'even'

先生(せんせい)まで間違(まちが)えた。

Even the teacher made a mistake.

彼(かれ)まで私(わたし)のことを信(しん)じてくれなかった。

Even he didn't believe me.

そこまで言(い)わなくてもいいでしょう。

You don't have to go that far in saying it.

死(し)ぬまで忘(わす)れない。

I'll never forget until I die.

4. to the extent of

Indicates the degree to which something extends. 泣(な)くまで笑(わら)った (laughed until [I] cried).

泣(な)くまで笑(わら)った。

I laughed until I cried.

声(こえ)が枯(か)れるまで歌(うた)った。

I sang until my voice gave out.

分(わ)かるまで説明(せつめい)します。

I'll explain until you understand.

お腹(おなか)がいっぱいになるまで食(た)べた。

I ate until I was full.

疲(つか)れて動(うご)けなくなるまで練習(れんしゅう)した。

I practiced until I was too tired to move.

まで marks an endpoint or limit — in time, space, or degree.

KEY PATTERNS:

から...まで: from...to (九時(くじ)から五時(ごじ)まで)
までに: by (deadline) — 金曜日(きんようび)までに出(だ)す (submit by Friday)
Verb + まで: until someone does something (分(わ)かるまで)

まで VS に:
に marks a specific point; まで emphasizes continuation up to that point. 五時(ごじ)まで働(はたら)く (work until 5) vs 五時(ごじ)に終(お)わる (finish at 5).

'EVEN' USAGE:
As 'even,' まで is stronger than も, implying a surprising or unexpected extreme: 先生(せんせい)まで間違(まちが)えた (even the teacher got it wrong).
