Functions

Common patterns

まで VS までに:
This is the commonest learner error with the particle, and the test is what kind of verb follows.

'EVEN' USAGE:
As "even", まで is stronger than : simply adds a case, while まで presents it as a surprising extreme.

VERB FORM BEFORE まで:
A verb before まで stays in the plain non-past form whatever the tense of the main clause: ()まで(わら)った (I laughed until I cried), never ×()いたまで. The same holds for まで.
