2. to mistake (A for B)
To confuse one thing with another, to misidentify.
I mistook him for someone else.
AをBと間違える = to mistake A for B
The twin sisters look so alike that it's easy to mistake them. I've gotten them mixed up many times too.
人違(ひとちが)して間違(まちが)えて(こえ)かけた
I mistakenly spoke to the wrong person.
砂糖(さとう)(しお)間違(まちが)えた。
I mistook the sugar for salt.
Their voices are similar, so I mistook my older sister for my younger sister on the phone.

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xを間違(まちが)える (mistake X).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 間違(まちが)えている = 'has made a mistake (error persists).'
