2. to mistake (A for B)
To confuse one thing with another, to misidentify.
彼(かれ)を他(ほか)の人(ひと)と間違(まちが)えた。
I mistook him for someone else.
AをBと間違える = to mistake A for B
双子(ふたご)の姉妹(しまい)はよく似(に)ているので、間違(まちが)えやすいです。私(わたし)も何度(なんど)も間違(まちが)えました。
The twin sisters look so alike that it's easy to mistake them. I've gotten them mixed up many times too.
人違(ひとちが)いをして間違(まちが)えて声(こえ)をかけた。
I mistakenly spoke to the wrong person.
砂糖(さとう)と塩(しお)を間違(まちが)えた。
I mistook the sugar for salt.
声(こえ)が似(に)ていたので、電話(でんわ)で姉(あね)と妹(いもうと)を間違(まちが)えてしまった。

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xを間違(まちが)える (mistake X).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 間違(まちが)えている = 'has made a mistake (error persists).'
