To form letters, characters, or symbols on a surface. Used for writing by hand, typing, or composing text. Covers both the physical act of writing and the creative act of composing.

名前(なまえ)を書(か)く。

毎日(まいにち)日記(にっき)を書(か)いている。一年(いちねん)続(つづ)けている。

2. to draw, to paint

Can also mean to draw or paint pictures, though 描(えが)く/描(か)く is more specific for artistic drawing.

絵(え)を書(か)く。

I draw a picture.

地図(ちず)を書(か)いてください。

Please draw a map.

子供(こども)が絵(え)を書(か)いている。

The child is drawing a picture.

猫(ねこ)の絵(え)を書(か)いた。

I drew a picture of a cat.

小(ちい)さい時(とき)から絵(え)を書(か)くのが好(す)きだった。今(いま)は仕事(しごと)で絵(え)を書(か)いている。

I've liked drawing since I was little. Now I draw for work.

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xを書(か)く (write X).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. 書(か)いている = 'is writing.'
