To rub or scratch a surface with fingernails or claws, often to relieve an itch or to scrape something away.
頭(あたま)を掻(か)く。
I scratch my head.
かさぶたを掻(か)いてはいけない。
You shouldn't scratch the scab.
蚊(か)に刺(さ)されたところが痒(かゆ)くて掻(か)いてしまった。
The mosquito bite was so itchy that I ended up scratching it.
