1. to scratch; to scrape

To rub or scratch a surface with fingernails or claws, often to relieve an itch or to scrape something away.

頭(あたま)を掻(か)く。

I scratch my head.

かさぶたを掻(か)いてはいけない。

You shouldn't scratch the scab.

蚊(か)に刺(さ)されたところが痒(かゆ)くて掻(か)いてしまった。

The mosquito bite was so itchy that I ended up scratching it.

Transitivity

Transitive: Xを掻(か)く.

Common expressions

頭(あたま)を掻(か)く: to scratch one's head (in embarrassment)
汗(あせ)をかく: to sweat
恥(はじ)をかく: to be embarrassed, to lose face
いびきをかく: to snore
あぐらをかく: to sit cross-legged
