かさぶた is the dry, hard crust that forms over a wound as it heals. Almost always written in hiragana. The kanji 瘡蓋(かさぶた) exists but is rarely used.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • かさぶたができる (a scab forms)
  • かさぶたが()れる (the scab comes off naturally)
  • かさぶたを()がす (to peel off a scab)

USAGE NOTE:
Children are often told not to pick at their scabs: かさぶたを()がさないで (don't peel your scab off). Peeling a scab prematurely can cause scarring.
