かさぶた is the dry, hard crust that forms over a wound as it heals. Almost always written in hiragana. The kanji 瘡蓋 exists but is rarely used.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- かさぶたができる (a scab forms)
- かさぶたが取れる (the scab comes off naturally)
- かさぶたを剥がす (to peel off a scab)
USAGE NOTE:
Children are often told not to pick at their scabs: かさぶたを剥がさないで (don't peel your scab off). Peeling a scab prematurely can cause scarring.
