Used when someone cries or sheds tears, whether from sadness, pain, joy, or other strong emotions.
子供(こども)が泣(な)いている。
The child is crying.
泣(な)かないでください。
Please don't cry.
映画(えいが)を見(み)て泣(な)きました。
I cried watching the movie.
赤(あか)ちゃんが夜(よる)ずっと泣(な)いていました。
The baby was crying all night.
悲(かな)しい話(はなし)を聞(き)いて、泣(な)きたくなったけど、我慢(がまん)しました。
I heard a sad story and wanted to cry, but I held back.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xが泣(な)く (X cries).

ASPECT: ている indicates ongoing action. 泣(な)いている = 'is crying.'
